Today my roommate and I were discussing the topic of sin. Being not an entirely religious person, but still being capable of feeling guilt and regret, I wanted to see what the dictionary definition of the word was. This is what I came up with; sin is any reprehensible, regrettable action, behavior, lapse, great fault, or offense. What it didn't say was that sin was the breaking of any specific law, so instead left up to each individual to decide which law inside themselves they are breaking.
What is it about some of our actions that make us feel guilt? Is there really a subconscious moral code inside each of us that separates us from the most primal instincts? We are, as humans, able to feel empathy, which I think probably has a role in our feeling remorse towards others' loss, pain, and other derogatory feelings. But why then do we feel guilt when we do wrong things to ourselves? Is it ourselves that we're feeling guilty towards or someone/something else? Where does guilt originate?
I guess each of us have different answers.
